Ep26: The Opal Tourney At Last
[NB: The tourney rolls take forever, and are not included.]
Night, the road north to Opal. It is the night after 4th waning Crescent and tomorrow will be new moon eve. As noted last time the weather is fair. (16 on the Jon Coen scale and a "yes but" on weather/median d6 roll)
The size of the next settlement is a village, then a hamlet, then the castle turrets of Opal catch the starlight!
The sprawl of what is, these days, a completely safe city, is surprisingly still confined within the old curtain wall. Regulations keep the Marshal Field clear! And it is around the field of war that a whole new tent city has sprung up. Licensed merchants have vast wooden fronts and less-legal types are fungal growths among them.
Then there are the temporary accommodations of the pleasure goers. Color and spectacle, peddlers and jongleurs everywhere.
Owing to the 18 hour delay regathering their loot the party is no longer early.

With these three heading away for their own purposes, I think it could be time to stay with them, just briefly, to see if their fortune is bad or good.
CiedPod: do they find an adventurer halfling? No.
Do they get a nice apartment and great food drink and luxuries? Yes but they are extra expensive owing to the tourney
UMbert: the scroll using Basic resukts (d8) is 5, protection from lycanthropy
His accommodations using the wizards association are welcoming and free for the time being. He will turn in a written report of course!
Where can the four supporters stay? In a somewhat bare room with shared facilities.
Can they be Eryn's servants? No and those are scrupulously supervised to make sure magic isn't used by anyone.
Eryn: is her admirer here? Yes and introduces herself. So let's meet her.
On an odd number she is beyrothed/engaged/married. On a 6 she is already living openly as a woman living with a woman. 6. So she plans to cheat/add a mistress? No and this is actually a pure sponsoring effort.

In years, she must be fairly close to Eryn's age. In looks she is stunning. In stature, slightly masculine.
The pavilion is ready, the grooms, Smith, farrier, and so on as well. "You must have clothing in my colors!"
Eryn begins to see there might be a hook under all the lure. She goes along with the favoritism nonetheless.
Now is the time that Kaelen's elite gear shows best, as Eryn is clad in raiment of indigo and ultramarine. The scabbard baldric and boots Kaelen brought remain.
I need to create a simple "who is in the lists" kind of format. I can adapt the OSE "city humans"
Im really only picturing the old traditional melee by the way, not the later specialized joust.
The padding plus reinforced chain of the standard melee gives Eryn AC4. Her baton or blunt is a d6. She has 3HD and +1 STR

Melee rules
Everyone has someone on their shielded side. Those people automatically get shield-parried, but a STR:STR contest may permit advantage next round.
Everyone can be hit from behind with advantage
All other positions simply hit using normal weapon. Binds are possible but only if a HD is committed to parry.
Use cards to represent melee combatants 1(the 1st bachelor knight) to Queen(Eryn)
Are knights ever female? No and women cannot take a vow of fealty. So the squires also have to be male. Yes
Can a man at arms or sergeant ever be female yes
Gender rolls for the 5 possibles: the level 5 Ftr is a woman all others are men.
The melee
All 12 cards are arranged in a clock pattern, to simulate how they entered the arena.
I start at 6 o clock because it s closest.

6 whip hard right so your neighbour can be attacked around the shield
Well, it plays out for an hour of recording, Eryn is eliminated by one of the level 10s, but she survives to the top half of eliminated, and before that, teamed up with the veteran and the level 5 female fighter to do major damage to the other level 10. And it was that which later enabled the veteran and female to pair up and take out the battered level 10 while Eryn was surviving against her eventual Victor. Then after slugging away at one another, clearly exhausted, the level 10 and woman took each other to the limit, and the woman won with 1hp remaining.
What I got from all that is that while math rocks are fun to roll, and I'm on the right track with advantage and ganging up, I want to keep possible max dice to three. I will try adding points rather than rolling more HD for a while. That's possibly going to make results too predictable though.
Let's get to know a bit more about the final five though.
