 The business with Azure (44 gold) takes a little longer than Jack, for one, hopes. She has no plan to pay real gold, and assumes the halflings will make up the 300-odd Wully was talking about (and which she never heard about). 

Azure issues the promised note of hand, and disconsolate, Ingle listens to Cied and Pod backing Wully up when he says "of course, no Big Folk can be invited into our village, but I'll vouch for Pod and Cied here, and meet you back at Irontown." 

They escort Azure back east while Cied and Pod head into the village tucked away in the downs. 

 

Here, I would like an answer to a question that popped into my mind while watching Tony Robinson on  YouTube explaining the Dorset Ridgeway.  

"Are they traveling over ancient ruins" Yes but invisible and unknown. 

It does occur to me that ancient traces would extend from the ridgeway up onto the jumble of unknown ground at the plateau's north-west section. 

 

Encounter main group: No and they make it back quicker than expected thanks to Azure's knowing the area well. 

 

Encounter at the halfling village: Yes. Nature social/other: social 

Difficulty (d6) level 1. The halflings celebrate – basically the EWOC dance breaks out – and Cied and Pod are sore tempted to delay. 

CHA tests: Cied 19 and Pod 13! They give in to temptation. This is Cied's chance to show off some of her fancy clothes, she and Pod jig and reel to their hearts content.  

Does any marital rift threaten? Yes. Is it temptations of the flesh? Yes but for Cied, not for Pod.  

A very dashing halfling gent with CHA17 dances with Cied. Pod drinks a little too much. The company of beer-loving halflings distracts him, and Cied needs to make a CHA SV. 10! Nothing happens, but it does sour the mood a little between the two. 

"Yes, he may be very handsome, a super dancer, and good company, but I've got you right here at my side bitching about your head and bad guts" Cied assures Pod sarcastically. He rolls 04 on WIS and shuts up. 

 

It is Day 4 of waxing crescent for the halflings. Weather, much as expected but a little worse. The halflings may well have commented about how frost is great for the rootcrops. 

Encounter check for riding back to Irontown: No. Getting lost, not if they are with Wully. Yes, they are with Wully. But do they actually go to irontown?

The previous day... 

At Irontown, which is reached around midday by the main group, Eryn checks on her warhorse and is not thrilled at all. She bails the innkeeper up.  

 

Did the Ironwright Guild tell the innkeeper to dose her horse? Yes. 

 

Eryn is no expert but as a Fighter she has trained around mounts most of her life, and knows that her warhorse has been got at. 

 

"You'll waive the cost of our lodging of course... and if his condition doesn't clear in the next few hours, I'll have you before the magistrate" Umbert promises.  

 

Terrified (check of 17 on CHA) the innkeeper rushes to get a fixer-upper dose from the town's pothecary and soon, all is well. 

 

Was there a point to all that? Yes and the Ironwright Guild has plans to make the party's life miserable.  

 

  1. A summons is delivered  

  2. A complaint against them is lodged with the Guild in irontown. 

  3. A further complaint is sent to the Viscount, though as we know it will be ignored as the party has their favor. 

 

Is there a better Inn? Yes but it sits uncomfortably close to the Wrights. 

Does the Guild offer emergency lodging? I checked this originally and the answer was no at the time... but in this case the answer is yes. 

 

"You ought to have a name by now" 

 

They settle on Glass Shields after some banter.  

 

What is the Guild like in irontown? See the sub-plot note 

 

 

As they deal with the local farrier, a court sergeant catches them up and delivers the summons. 

Initially Ingle thinks Umbert is the obvious barrister but – perhaps very tired by now after no sleep and long hours in the saddle – Umbert seems very unconvincling – even though he actually has had legal 101 type training as part of the M-U Assn. To everyone's surprise Xantu volunteers, stipulating Ingle will be his solicitor.

18.1 But can we take a level break? Eryn now uses a Sword+1. She puts aside the polearm.   [How does a +1 work? It permits a 1-pip movement of either penetration or damage, but not both. If you max off you max off, UNLESS you are attacking something with the same or worse AC such as AC8 for a sword, or AC6 for a  shortsword .]     NOTE if  the party ever does get to the dungeon of the bugbear regent, his best weapon is +2 and has no powers beyond the poison. He has only one other magic weapon among all his followers, a +1 with no extra ability.   It is still morning of 1 st  waxing halfmoon. The party uses two more torches leaving, just in case things have changed.   Burdened to some degree they return by the exact same path (veering wide of possible mink) to the manor. 15.1 is this goodbye? Time: the morning of  the first day of the New Moon. In theory, if Kaelen is satisfied, she will arrange elite gear for them within 11 days, or by dawn of 2 nd  day of waxing gibbous. But we are not sure if she will be satisfied. War with at least one Dwarf Lord might be the immediate result, after all!     Let's put a couple of framing questions    Is kaelen delighted that the baron had to die   Yes and the party goes up in her esteem, especially when she hears about a dead elf.
