Small troubles

(Apologies if the script order does not match the audio. The script appears in the order I played it out.)

33.1 the defense moves out

The party swiftly arms these common villagers with spare weapons. Notably the torchbearer can be ready to use Eryn's bow and the clubber can be ready to use Xantu's bow.

 

I also need to know about the monastery – known to be a royal grant, name Monastery of the Glad Fields

 

Size : 4, relatively big

Do the monks train for martial defense no but their lay brothers use common simple weapons.

Number of lay brothers: 8

Place on the religion spectrum: 11, same as Uuluw.

Do the goblins tunnel in? No but they use the monastery conduits and irrigation canals. These are what enable the herb meadows.

 

Range 160yds or 2 turns MV.

Surprise characters no  goblins yes

Pre-rounds goblins are attacking various weak points with odds of 3 to 1.

 

Lay brothers are level 1 with max hp (4 5 or 6) humans, with AC9 and wielding staves d4

 

By the time the party meets the commander and 4 Bodyguard goblins the other 32 will be reduced to 30.

 

Let's now leap back to where we were.

It is time for the party to relax, have drinks and find the best place to eat. Farrier can easily guide them on this and although her family is not in the bakery or tavern trades she has a strong preference.

 

Relaxed for the time being, the party listens to plans for the solstice festival. They decide to stay on when their host opines that larger towns will be crowded with festival prep. She herself has four beds that can easily sleep eight.

 

As Eryn walks at a relaxed pace across to the farrier she notices a number of keen onlookers. This is where we meet the potential retainers. Eryn rolls an 09 on CHA and a friendly conversation is struck up. She allows some to test her bow, others a hand axe. She notes that two are weak.

 

Evening draws in, and the urgent call to arms we know about already.

"These monks are friends to Law, i take it?"

"Aye mum, and godly folk"

"Glass Shields! Glass Shields! Glass Shields! Sally forth! You - Cis - will you carry a torch?:"

Uh sure...

"Yen was it? You seem to be able to use my bow... and uh Luz, keep this handaxe for now"

The party has 160 y to get to where they would see goblins, which is 8 rounds at cautious halfling pace. Do they run? No and stay stealthy.

 

Are goblin raiders setting fires? Yes but not mandated - just the less disciplined trios


33.2 the hobgoblin rearguard

Range at which they identify the hobgoblin leader and bodyguards 20 yards. Is the night sky occluded by cloud yes but patches of the halfmoon show through. It is in one such patch that the hefty shoulders of the boss are glimpsed. 

Surprise round: Kylie and Xantu use their range weapons. 

Kylie Rolla a 5, the perfect score unless this boss is more heavily armored. Is he? Yes but just by 1 

She uses DEX to increase accuracy, sending 4 damage in. Xantu's xbow does 3. The hobgoblin boss has 9hp based on minout rolls. It is still in the fight. 

Round 1 inits 4 even. 

ML for the boss and bodyguards. 3! They utter bloodthirsty howls and race to close quarters.  

Characters: Eryn is ready in full gear. She advances to cut off the boss's charge. 

Ingle is ready with a baton but his goal this round is to coordinate the villagers. He says "light the torch!" And fights defensively. 

Jack slips around a flank. But his roll of 16 offers no help. A Bodyguard spots and counters. 

Umbert has very little he can do. In a true emergency he could use his wand of paralyzation.  

Pod and Cied loose at point blank range. 

Kylie falls back and looses again. 

Xantu hands his crossbow off to Tad and draws his hammer, two-handing it for now. If Eryn is next to him he stands, if she is further back he fights defensively and drops back to her. 

 

Here's the matchup based on monsters racing to melee by the most direct route

Missiles as monsters rush. Disadvantage for CiedPod. Both get arrows in. They hit gob4, killing it. 

Kylie is at disadvantage owing to Eryn giving some cover. Kylie strikes gob3 for 2dmg 

 

Has the torch flared up? No 

Hobgoblin rolls 2, a wound. Eryn finds to her surprise she is faster and better trained and uses shield to block it with a spare HD. She also slices into the hobgoblin and promotes the 1 to a 2 with STR. This drops the leader. 

 

Jack vs goblin. The goblin has 5hp left. It delivers a Vicious cut, 4, and Jack fails to dodge with a HD. In reply Jack nicks the goblin and uses DEX to improve the cut to 2. Jack has 6hp remaining. 

 

Xantu vs goblin, 5hp, and wounded gob 3hp 

Distance back to Eryn (d3-1) 10ft. Xantu is defensive  so the 2 attackers are at disadvantage. Their cuts glance off. 

 

Round 2 inits characters 3 goblins 5 

Morale now the boss is dead: 4 stick with it! 

Gob1 v Jack: another wound, jack drops to 3hp unless he can parry – he does! His dmg is only 1, so he is on 5hp. 

Gob2 and 3 v xantu: not good, even though xantu has fallen back and is no longer defensive. Both cuts glance off. 

The torch is now well alight but is not throwing clear light over the whole area.  

Eryn fails to see/hear Jack and instead chops the head off the wounded goblin attacking Xantu: Xantu himself uses his hammer to crush the other goblin. Jack feels an arrow whip by him and hears it thud into the goblin: it has 1hp left. Jack decides to attack... and maxes off! 

Cied leaps in but the poor light also fools her axe. Finally Pod, from behind the gob, but still at disadv, double-1s. At disadv that's a crit threat. He misses the confirm but 1dmg still kills the goblin. 

 

Loot/check for wounds/take ears. 

 

"Im hurt, I'llhave to head back unless I get healing" - Jack 

"I got a cut but not enough to stop me" - eryn. 

Will ingle use the staff? Yes 5, jack gets 4 healing and is back up to 9 of 10hp. Eryn is on 10 of 12, no others are hurt. 

 

"Fires are burning! No time for chatter!" - Pod 

"Time for ear'-loppin'" - Cied  

 

The villagers head toward the monastery proper, Xantu cinching his shield into place and offering Tad advice.  

 

Party order:  Cis with torch, Tad with crossbow, Xantu with shield and hammer, Yen with bow, Luz with handaxe, Eryn, Ingle, Umbert, Kylie, Jack and halflings. 

Loot:  160 silver coin worth of ornaments and decent quality weapons. Plus a hobgob ear and 4 gob ears. 

 

By this time the monks have either retreated to their cellars or are dead. 

Number living: 11 

Are any lay brothers still alive: no 

 

 Umbert's spells: charm person, ventriloquism, knock  

"We can enter through the main door as long as it's not barricaded. Or perhaps one of you know of a lychgate?" 

 

Ingle's spells; purify food and drink, protection from evil (caster). He now casts that spell. 

 

Kylie's spells; magic missile, shield, web 

"If we catch them grouped in a passage I shall cast web...  so don't charge in" 

 

Do the locals know of a lychgate yes but it's on the far side 

 

Is the main door in front of them yes 

The party heads there. Umbert casts the spell, bolts shoot back and the judas gate in it is open.
